Lagos CJ, Alogba, inaugurates tribunal to handle LG election petitions

The Lagos State Chief Judge, Justice Kazeem Alogba has inaugurated a five-man Local Government Election Petition Tribunal which will handle various petitions as a result of the outcome of the last local government election in the state.

The tribunal was sworn in at the Ikeja High Court. Members of the Election AppealTribunal includes Hon Justice Funke Obadina as the Chairman. Others were Justice Idris Adesuwa Oke Lawal, Justice Wasiu Aminahun, Justice Jubril Abisoye, and Justice Olubunmi Fadipe.

The Chief Judge expressed confidence in the integrity of the members of the tribunal to handle the task successfully without fear or favour.

“We are all aware of local government elections were conducted in Lagos recently. I was informed appeals have started coming in necessitating setting up of this appeal tribunal,” the Chief Judge said.

He added: “I have thought of the antecedent of the judges and can vouch for their integrity. It’s not difficult getting them together because I have known them for years. I want to congratulate those of you choosing for this task. I have no doubt all of u will do well. It’s a task you are all called upon for the sake of humanity.

The judiciary is not a money-making arm of government but we lay the foundation for government. The task is to further help secure the relationship between the government and the people who came out to vote and contest but lost and we’re dissatisfied with the election result. I vouch for you that no undue pressure will.be on you and I know you will.success.”

Speaking on behalf of other members of the tribunal, the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Obadina pledged to work judiciously on all the cases and work within the time frame. She promised petitioners will. get justice and the will. of Lagosians will be Paramount to the tribunal.
