Lagos Assembly crisis gets messier as police withdraw Meranda, Oniru’s security

 

The leadership crisis rocking the Lagos House of Assembly on Thursday got messier as police authority withdrew the security aides of the Speaker, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

The withdrawal followed the reluctance of the Speaker to resign from the position in the aftermath of the intervention of national party leaders in the crisis.

The leaders comprising former governor of Osun State, Bisi Akande and the former governor of Ogun State, Olusegun Osoba had proposed that Meranda, who is from the same Lagos Central with the governor should vacate the position for another member who is from the same Lagos West Division as the removed speaker, Mudasiru Obasa.

On Thursday morning, the media aide to the speaker confirmed that the security details of the speaker had been withdrawn.

“All Police escort guarding the Speaker of the Lagos House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda and those safeguarding the Lagos House of Assembly have been withdrawn with immediate effect leaving the house and the speaker vulnerable to attack,” he said

A source also confirmed that the security personnel at the palace of Oniru of Iruland, Oba Gbolahan Lawal. The monarch is the elder brother of the new Speaker.

“The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the withdrawal of police personnel from the Oniru of Iruland’s palace, the Lagos State House of Assembly complex, and the security detail assigned to the Speaker of the House,” the source said.
