Five soldiers and nine police personnel, including a divisional police officer, are the latest victims of the senseless killings by criminals of Nigerian security enforcement operatives.
The separate incidents occurred in Rivers and Kebbi states on Monday.
The Nigerian Xpress gathered that five soldiers were killed when gunmen attacked a security formation in Abua/Odua Local Government Area, Rivers State in the early hours of Monday.
The attack followed the one in which three soldiers, three Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) personnel, and two policemen were attacked and killed at different checkpoints in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state on Sunday.
The Nigerian Xpress further learned that the perpetrators carted away the rifles belonging to the security personnel and burnt an operational vehicle belonging to the Customs at Elele, while the soldiers attacked at Omagwa were allegedly beheaded.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the Sunday incident.
Security commanders in Rivers State were said to be holding an emergency meeting at the Government House, in Port Harcourt at the time this report was filed.
In the same vein, suspected bandits also attacked a Police Station in Kebbi State, killing the Divisional Police Officer and eight other officers.
Details of the Kebbi incident were still being expected.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has described as barbaric the dastardly attack on security personnel along Omagwa/Isiokpo/Elele Owerri Road.
The governor, in a statement by Kelvin Ebiri, his Special Assistant on Media, said there was no justification for such a heinous and condemnable attack targeted against innocent security personnel on the legitimate duty of protecting life and property in the state.
He said, “The Government of Rivers State is saddened by the unwarranted callous attack on security personnel. We offer our sympathies to the relatives of those who lost their lives in the attack.
“We condemn this heinous act, share the grief of the security agencies and convey our sincere condolences.”
The governor, who charged the security agencies to be vigilant, affirmed that “the Government and people of Rivers State stand in solidarity with security agencies at these difficult times of unwarranted and mindless violence”.
Governor Wike demanded that the perpetrators of the attack must be fished out and brought to justice.
