Kano Emirship: Court grants dethroned Emir Bayero permission to appeal

Justice Liman Mohammed of the Federal High Court in Kano, on Thursday, ruled that it has the jurisdiction to hear the case instituted by a traditional title holder in Kano Emirate, Aminu Babba Dan Agundi, regarding the dethronement of Aminu Ado Bayero as the 15th Emir of Kano by the Kano State government.

The ruling comes just days after a Kano State High Court ordered a substituted service on Bayero and four other dethroned Emirs in Kano State in a related case filed by the state government.

According to Leadership, Justice Mohammed’s ruling affirmed that Bayero’s case can proceed before it, to ensure that he has the opportunity to contest the legality of his dethronement.

This development is a crucial step in the ongoing legal battle that has significant implications for the leadership of traditional institutions in Kano State.

Recall that the Federal High Court sitting in Kano had three weeks ago gave an interim order barring the Kano State government from implementing the State’s Emirate Law 2024 enacted by the State House of Assembly, which led to the removal of Bayero and four others.

The embattled Bayero has clinged on to the Federal High Court order to stay put at a mini palace and continued to lay claim to the Kano throne despite the reinstatement and appointment of Muhammadu Sani II as the 16th Emir of Kano by Governor Abba Yusuf.
