June 12 protest: Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, tweets Nigerian flag

At exactly midnight, Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey tweeted the Nigerian flag in possible solidarity with Nigerians who want to protest against bad governance on Democracy Day.

Twitter is banned in Nigeria but citizens are bypassing the ban through virtual private networks (VPNs). The government has threatened to prosecute those still using the platform.

Dorsey’s latest action has been hailed by many Nigerians who think he is standing by them when President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is trying to gag free speech in the country.

During the EndSARS protest, Dorsey donated money to the organisers through Bitcoin.

The Nigerian government see Twitter as a platform used by many to incite citizens against the government.

Twitter confirmed on Friday that it has started talks with the Nigerian government to restore access to the microblogging site.

“Today marks one week since Twitter was blocked in Nigeria. We have informed the Nigerian government that we are ready to meet for an open discussion to address mutual concerns and see the service restored.

We remain advocates for the free and #OpenInternet everywhere. #KeepitOn,” the company said.
