JAMB visiting Professor, Adesina, wins British Academy Global Professorship Award
Two eminent Nigerian professors have been selected to receive the highly coveted British Academy Global Professorships for 2023–24.
A renowned University of Ibadan scholar, who is a visiting professor with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof. Olutayo Charles Adesina, of the Department of History of the university, has won the prestigious British Academy Global Professorship Award.
The Academy made the announcement on its website on 11th April, 2024, for the 2023 cohort of Global Professorships in which Adesina was selected for his research titled: “The Town and Gown Interface: Ibadan and the Decolonisation of Social Knowledge in the 20th century.”
Prof. Adesina was among the eight Global Professorships award recipients announced by the British Academy.
The Global Professorships scheme was designed to foster collaboration between leading international researchers and UK-based institutions on new and cutting-edge research projects.
The latest cohort of Global Professors would undertake research on a range of diverse issues, including the development of novel food system models to benefit the society as well as the exploration of history of West African communities through museum collections.
The project, as it pertains to Prof. Adesina, would offer an innovative study of politics of knowledge production in colonial and post-colonial Africa.
The British Academy, which was established by Royal Charter in 1902, is the umbrella body for the humanities and social sciences in the UK. It seeks to accord proper recognition to national and international academics in the humanities and social sciences, among other noble objectives.
Prof. Adesina, who is currently a visiting Professor of History with the Board, is a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Letters, the apex organisation of humanities scholars in Nigeria.
He joined the services of the University of Ibadan on 1st December,1993, as Lecturer II and rose through the ranks to attain the rank of Professor of History in 2007. He has served the University of Ibadan in various capacities.
Prof. Adesina has carved a niche for himself as a scholar and historian. He has received several distinguished international visiting fellowships and awards and has published extensively on economic and social history of West Africa.
