Sen. Athan Achonu, the Labour Party standard bearer in the November governorship election in Imo State, has promised to conduct a free, fair and credible local government election within six months of his administration when elected.
Achonu also reiterated his pledge to institute local government autonomy in the state.
The front line candidate made his intentions known when he parleyed with the Nigeria Society of Engineers, NSE, Imo State chapter, and assured the body of his commitment to collaborate with them for the reconstruction of the dilapidated infrasture in the state.
The governor-in-waiting shared his vision to develop Imo State into a leading sub-national government in Nigeria, and sought the support cooperation of the engineers to take back and rebuild the state and save it from total collapse.
Achonu, who is popular for his ‘Aku Ruo Ulo’ invedtment philosophy, recalled that the NSE had honoured him with an award in 2014 because of his contributions to the engineering profession and vowed to deploy similar energy to do more quality engineering works when he takes over as governor after the November election.
On the local government administration in the state, the populist candidate said: “I will conduct the freest and fairest local government election in Nigeria. The local government system is very key towards sustainable peace and security in our state, hence one of my priority agenda is to create a Local government autonomy.”

The multi-billionaire investor also disclosed his plans to upgrade and transform Owerri Airport into a Cargo Airport as well as taking advantage of the constitutional authority granted the states to generate power and constant power supply to enable homes and SME businesses to operate seamlessly in he state.
“I will declare a state of emergency in the power sector. This will be in line with the new Power Act of the Federal Government that empowers states to generate power,” he added.
In his response, the Chairman of the NSE in Imo State, Engr. Iwuamadi Obioma, said Achonu is the first among the governorship contestants to rub minds with the NSE body in Imo State.
He said: “In the history of the State, Senator Athan Achonu is the first governorship candidate to come to interact with the Nigeria Society of Engineers and to share his plans for the state and the engineering profession.

“This shows a mark of respect and acceptance of the engineering profession. NSE will continue to sustain and nurture the very warm and cordial relationship which has existed between the Senator and the umbrella body of Engineers in Imo state.”
In his vote of thanks, Engr. Chinenye Nnawuihe said: “We have seen your doggedness and passion to develop the economy of the state. Your passion is incomparable.
“We haven’t been lucky to have other governorship candidates come to see us, but we believe that since you have come here, we have heard you; we appreciate your message and we wish you well,” he said.
On Achonu’s entourage were the Director General of his Campaign Organisation, Hon. Chime Nzeribe, and other top members of the Campaign Council.
