Ogun State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olakunle Oluomo, who was recently alleged to have been involved in financial impropriety, has allayed the fears of his supporters and the people of the state that there was no cause for alarm, maintaining his innocence.

Oluomo, who has been dragged before, the court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has urged the populace to allow the court to do its job, enthusing that he would come out clean.

In a letter personally signed by him and made available to the media in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, read in part: “I maintain my innocence in the recent Economic and Financial Crimes Commission charges against me and I will want the court to decide because  the hyperbolic nature of the petitions written by the impeached former Deputy Speaker, Dare Kadiri was also reflected in the charges.”

According to the letter, Oluomo explained that, “By law, I am not the Accounting Officer of the House, for emphasis, the House under my leadership operates only one bank account  since 2019, through which running cost and allowances are paid directly into the bank accounts of individual  Honourable members and staff of the House including the petitioner.”

He also cleared the air on charges 10 and 11 which he said were for the Eighth Legislature before he became the Speaker.

The letter reads further thus: “I also like to say that the refusal to honour the initial invitation of EFCC was because of the method adopted by EFCC is against section 36 of the Constitution and we challenged it in court, this is in the public domain as it was widely reported but the EFCC refused to wait for the pronouncement in that case before taking further steps, despite having joined issues with us in court.

“I have always been disciplined and upright in my position, conducts and dealings with people, I shall continue to remain myself with truth and honour as my goal. I thank everyone that showed love and concern in the last few days. Thanks and God bless you all,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Youths in Ogun State have cautioned political mercenaries and naysayers to desist from using the on-going court case against the State House of Assembly by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC to pollute the peaceful coexistence currently being enjoyed in the state.

The youths, under the umbrella of the Nigerian Youth Congress (NYC), Ogun State chapter made this known in a release signed by its chairman, Comrade Seyi Afolabi, in Abeokuta, the state capital.

The youth noted in the press releasw that since the EFCC had charged the case to court, the competent court of law should thereby be allowed to adjudicate in the matter before unnecessarily crucifying those involved.

“According to the rule of law, they remain innocent until proven otherwise by a court of competent jurisdiction,” Afolabi informed, cautioning that the current peaceful ambience in the political arena of the state should not be toyed with, by “attention-seeking politicians.”

Afolabi called on security agencies in the state to up their game in bringing to book sponsors of propaganda, either in the media or anywhere else, especially on the matter at hand.

“Ogun State has gone beyond the dark days of lawlessness and anything that will resuscitate such should be vehemently kicked against,” he concluded.
