Gbajabiamila, Sanwo-Olu, Fashola, four others awarded Honorary Doctor at LASU’s  26th convocation ceremonies

The Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu,  Femi Gbajabiamila, First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, and  former Governor of Lagos State,  Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) were among top personalities awarded Honorary Doctorate degree by the Lagos State University (LASU), on Thursday.

The occasion was the 26th convocation ceremonies and 40th anniversary of the institution  as well as  the awarding  of diplomas, first degrees and prizes, post graduate diplomas, master’s degrees and conferment of ranks of professors,  honorary, doctorate degrees and appreciation award.

Others honoured with the Honorary Doctorate degree include  the immediate past governor of Ekiti State,  Dr. Kayode Fayemi, Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, Prof. Daniel  Olukoya, and Oba  Sulaiman  Ashade, the Oniba-Ekun.

While  Gbajabiamila was awarded Honorary Doctor of Law (Education, Community and National Development),Fashola was awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters, Urban and Rural Community Development and Youth Empowerment), and Fayemi Honorary Doctor of Letters (Human Rights, National Integration and African Security Development),

Sanwo-Olu was awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Child Healthcare, Environmental Development and Women Empowerment),  Oba Elegushi was awarded Honorary Doctor of Arts (Broadcasting, Community Integration and Human Rights Advocate), Prof  Olukoya awarded Honorary Doctor of Science (Genetics and Biotechnology), and  Oba    Ashade the firstl awarded Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (Grassroots Development).

For her contributions to the development of LASU, former deputy governor of Lagos State,  Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire was honoured with the Excellence Award.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,  while acknowledging the role of quality education in the society thanked the management of LASU for holding fast to the high standard of excellence  the institution was known for.

“The excellence has made the institution to be at par with other universities across the world. It is my hope all the graduands will be worthy ambassadors of the university.  The essence of education is to meet social needs. The amount of foreign currency we are losing from students going abroad needs to be reversed,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He further said the state has made investment in education as one of the pillars of his administration’s THEMES agenda.

The Pro-chancellor of LASU, Prof. David Sunmoni, in his speech, said the institution has experienced tremendous improvement in the last two years. He expressed confidence in the ability of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello to transform the university. He implored all the graduands to be good ambassadors of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello said the institution has made its mark, adding that LASU has fulfilled the vision of its founding fathers by helping in building institutional capacity of the state.

“It stands to reason that LASU’s contribution to the training of qualified manpower continues to inspire thousands of young graduates who are shaping the industry and adding great value to the nation,” she said.

In his acceptance speech, Babatunde Fashola urged  Nigerians to project the positive image of the country. According to him, ‘we must cease to be a nation of right but a nation of duty.

“The dream to create and keep LASU alive is that of public duty. We must rise and cease to be a nation of rights and be a nation of duty. Our most important duty is to project the good name and image of our country,” Fashola said.

On his part, Fayemi commended the management of LASU for the high standard of the university and pledged ‘to be a good ambassador of this great institution.’
