The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has debunked rumours that it was planning a nationwide protest for Friday over the removal of fuel subsidy.
Although the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, was angered by the development, which he described as ‘reckless price increase’ to punish the masses, he added that there would be no protests for now.
In a statement released, on Thursday, by the Head of Information Unit for the Congress, Benson Upah, Mr. Ajaero refuted the reports saying, “The Nigeria Labour Congress has been made aware of circulating social media stories asserting that the union intends to commence protest action on Friday, June 2nd, in response to the hike in PMS pump prices. While we are deeply disturbed by this thoughtless price surge, designed to inflict untold suffering on ordinary Nigerians, we currently have no intentions to initiate any action on Friday.

“Our immediate plans involve holding organisational meetings on Friday, June 2nd, 2023, to discuss the issue of prices. In view of this, we urge the public to disregard these stories, as they did not originate from the Congress.”
The NLC promised to make known it’s next line of action after the Friday meeting regarding the subsidy removal.
President Bola Tinubu had in his inaugural speech ordered removal of the fuel subsidy one month ahead of schedule. This has spiralled steep spike in the price of fuel and other products across the country much the chagrin of Nigerians.
