The Nigerian Navy has said its firemen, a sub-unit of the Naval Headquarters Garki, in Abuja, averted a massive inferno at the popular UTC Shopping Plaza in Garki area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
It was learnt that the incident happened, on Monday.
This was contained in a statement issued by the navy on Tuesday, noting that an electric spark in one of the plaza shops ignited the fire outbreak with the potential to consume many other shops and properties.

The statement further affirmed that no lives were lost and damage to properties was limited.
The statement reads in part; “The Nigerian Navy (NN) Firemen, a sub-unit of Naval Headquarters Garki Abuja were called to action yesterday 15 April 2024 and helped avert what would have been a massive inferno at the popular UTC Shopping Plaza in Garki.
“According to eyewitness reports, an electric spark in one of the plaza shops ignited the fire outbreak with the potential to consume many other shops & properties. However as the fire surged, the NN FireMen were called in to assist the Federal Fire Service (FFS) and the National Defence College (NDC) Fire Service in fighting the flames.
“On arrival, the NN firemen swung into action and the situation was brought under control. Thankfully no lives were lost and damage to properties was limited.
