Fighting diseases: Expert recommends high water intake

A medical expert Wosilat Yusuf, says water maintains body fluid balance and prevents high temperature, weakness, as well as a lot of illnesses.

Yusuf, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ilorin on Thursday, therefore recommended high intake of water at all times.

The veteran nurse stressed the need for people to take more fluids such as pap, natural fruit drinks, and other healthy drinks which according to her, ensures a healthy lifestyle and prevents unnecessary illnesses.

“The body should contain 60 per cent water, and this helps humans maintain a healthy balance.

“The functions of bodily fluids include digestion, absorption, circulation, creation of saliva, transportation of nutrients and maintenance of body temperature,” the Matron with the General Hospital, Ilorin, said.

She maintained that it was important that the body replaced body fluids that were usually lost through sweat, urine and stool.

“When your water intake does not equal your water loss, dehydration, which leads to adverse health reactions, may occur.

“There are also many benefits of high water intake which include calories control, energizing the muscles and keeping the skin radiant.

“Proper water intake also aids kidney function and maintain normal bowel activity,” she said.

She suggested that people should take beverage with snacks and meal, which will serve as water.

“Eating more fruits and vegetables is also important as their water content will add to your hydration, because about 20 per cent of our fluid intake comes from foods.

“Keep a bottle of water in your bag, car or on the office desk and always choose the beverages that meet your individual needs.

For example, if you are watching your caloric intake, go for drinks that contain zero calories,’’ Yusuf added. (NAN)
