FCT rerun: Residents express readiness to vote again

Residents of Kawu in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), have expressed readiness to vote their desired candidates again if elections were rescheduled.

The residents expressed readiness in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja.

NAN recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday, declared the chairmanship and councillorship elections, held on Saturday, March 9, inconclusive.

Prof. Wesley Nafarda, Returning Officer, Bwari Council Elections, who declared the elections in the council inconclusive also, attributed the situation to thuggery at some polling units.

According to him, while PDP scored 22, 711, APC scored 16, 714 but 17 polling units including all the 12 polling units at Kawu ward were cancelled.
Mr. Musa Baba, a resident and elder statesman in the area, told NAN that the people in the area were eager to vote again.

He said that the votes of the people counted in the past elections and was expected to count again, irrespective of intimidation from any quarter.
“ We are a people with one voice. We will not be afraid but will use our cards to come out any day they schedule the elections, to vote and we will definitely choose who we chose from the beginning.
” The only thing is, security agents must be on ground and must be non-partisan while ensuring that everything goes smoothly.”
Mr. Haruna Ishaku, who spoke on behalf of some youths in the area said that it was unfortunate what happened during the previous elections, however, it would not discourage the electorate to come out again.
This, he said, was because it was the right of the people to choose through elections, whom they want as their leader without any fear or intimidation.
He said: “It is unfair when other party supporters see that they are loosing and they find a way to disrupt the entire process, it is not fair but we believe it would be free and fair this time around, so we are waiting.”
He also called for adequate security to be put in place to ensure a smooth process, free of intimidation.
Meanwhile, when NAN called Mrs. Idowu Adeyemi, the Resident Electoral Officer of INEC, Bwari, to confirm a new date for the elections, she said that no date had been scheduled at the time of filing this report. (NAN)
