Farouk Lawan, a former member of the House of Representatives, has regained his freedom after completing his five-year jail term in Kuje Prison.
The Supreme Court had in January affirmed the five-year sentence to the former Kano lawmaker by the Court of Appeal.
Lawan was in 2021 convicted and jailed for accepting a $500,000 bribe from Femi Otedola, Chairman, Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.
A five-member panel affirmed the 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal which upheld Lawan’s five-year jail term on only three counts of the charges on which he was tried at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.
The lead judgment, which was prepared by Justice John Okoro and read by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the Supreme Court found that Lawan’s appeal was without merit and dismissed it.
However, on Tuesday, Lawan was seen in a video leaving Kuje prison.
