The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki a new certificate to correct the error in the spelling of his surname.
The governor reportedly participated in the mandatory one year service for fresh Nigerian graduates in 1980 but instead of his spelling his surname correctly as Obaseki, the discharge certificate issued to him bore Obasek.
This error was one of the reasons the screening committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) gave for disqualifying the governor from participating in its June 22 gubernatorial election primaries.
Responding to Obaseki’s request for re-issuance of his certificate, the NYSC in a letter dated June 19, 2020, said that its investigations confirmed the need to issue him a new certificate.
The letter, which was signed by Okonofua K N on behalf of the NYSC Director General, read: “I refer to your letter referenced EOG/ABI/99/VOL IV/172 dated 18th June 2020, on the above subject matter please.”
“I am directed to inform you that after investigation, the management of the National Youth Service Corps has approved that a new Certificate of National Service reflecting the Surname OBASEKI be produced as the earlier Certificate number 063107 dated 6th August 1980 has been canceled due to an error in the surname i.e. OBASEK.
“Accept the assurances of the Director-General’s regard.”
