Economy: Obasanjo blasts politicians for mismanaging resources, says Nigeria’s problems self-inflicted

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday said Nigeria’s social and economic problems are self-inflicted adding that God did not create Nigerians to go through the sufferings they are currently experiencing.

The former President also noted that Nigeria is blessed with natural resources to make every Nigerian economically comfortable but lamented that the resources have been misused.

Obasanjo spoke at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Methodist Archdiocese of Abuja.

He said Nigerian leaders have failed to use the resources the country is blessed with for the betterment of Nigerians and the development of the country. He called for effective management to ensure prosperity in the land.

The former President noted that the country has struggled to manage its resources effectively which were caused
by poor management and decision-making.

“God has equipped Nigeria with everything necessary for growth. Just as Egypt has the River Nile, we have our own rivers and a wealth of natural resources. Nigeria was not created to struggle, and it’s our responsibility to recognise and utilise these blessings. Many nations lack the resources we take for granted,” Obasanjo lamented.

He added: “We have misused the gifts God has given us but if we humble ourselves and seek His guidance, He will heal our land.”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who was represented at the event by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, urged Nigerians to pray for their leaders.

He commended the church for its role in promoting education, social justice, and community service, and urged the religious body to continue providing moral leadership during challenging times.
