Ebonyi SIEC reschedules LG poll for Aug. 29

The Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) has fixed Saturday August 29, as the rescheduled date for the conduct of Local Government Election.

Chairman of the Commission, Barr. Jossy Eze, announced postponement, on Wednesday, in Abakaliki, while presenting the commission revised Timetable for the completion of the outstanding programmes/activities, to representatives of Registered Political Parties, Stakeholders and Security Agencies.

He attributed the shift in date by two weeks  to an Order from a High Court restraining the Commission from conducting the Polls on its earlier slated  date of August 15.

“EBSIEC issued a revised Time Table shifting Date of Election, to enable Political Parties conduct Primary Election including the Claimant in that Suit.

“The Commission was served with an Order of Service from a High Court restraining it from going on with the election until the Commission issued a revised Timetable for the Claimants in the suit to be allowed to conduct their primaries”.

Barr. Eze described the Commission as a Law abiding institution that was poised to comply with all Court Orders.

“One of the parties went to court, asked for window of opportunities to conduct party primaries”

The EBSIEC Chairman outlined various programmes and activities slated by the Commission to include Continuation of Electioneering Campaign by Political Parties, Party Primaries by Parties. Training of Ad-hoc Staff, Publication of Notice of Polls, Release of Final List of Candidates for the election and Election Day (simultaneous Accreditation and Voting from 8.00am -3.00p.m. on August 29th 2020.

Reacting to the revised Timetable, the Chairman of National Alliance of Nigeria Mr James Obasi, urged Political Parties to shun frivolous court petitions that may hamper the scheduled programmes and activities of the Commission.

The meeting had in attendance the Secretary of the Commission Barrister Chukwuemeka Orji, EBSIEC  Commissioners including Mr Hans Offia, Mr Alphonsus Igwewaobi and Chief Fidelis Ogodo among others .
