One of the Nigerians that the federal government evacuated from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, is dead.
Akin Abayomi, Lagos commissioner for health, broke the news in a tweet on Tuesday night.
He said the deceased had “severe underlying health condition”.
Abayomi appealed to residents of Lagos to be cautious despite the easing of the lockdown President Muhammadu Buhari ordered to limit the spread of COVID-19.
However, in another tweet on Wednesday morning, Abayomi clarified that the test result to determine if the deceased had COVID-19 was still being awaited.
“The death of a recent Dubai returnee previously announced on my social media handles earlier was a presumed COVID19 related death. The result of the confirmation test for COVID19 status is still being awaited,” he wrote.
A total of 256 Nigerians who were stranded in Dubai as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic were evacuated last Wednesday.
They are currently under quarantine in Ikeja and Lekki areas of Lagos.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has said they would be tested for COVID-19 at the end of the 14-day quarantine.
