Drug abuse: Politicians hiding illegal drugs in their homes, reveals Senator Kawu

The Senator representing Kano South, Kawu Sumaila, has revealed that many politicians are hiding illegal drugs in their various homes which has contributed to the high rate of drug abuse in the country

Sumaila made the revelation on Tuesday at plenary while speaking in a debate on a bill sponsored by Senator Rufai Hanga from the (Kano Central titled, “A bill for an act to establish a national institute for drug awareness and rehabilitation 2024.’

Senator Hanga had argued that the establishment of the institute would help in coordinating and promoting drug awareness as well as prevent drug abuse and facilitate the rehabilitation of drug users.

However, in his contribution, Senator countered the argument of Senator Hanga on the ground that politicians are fueling the increase in drug abuse among youths.

He noted that the fight against drug abuse will not succeed until politicians also change their way of doing things and abstains from promoting drug abuse.

Senator Sumaila proposed that all politicians seeking political offices must be made to undergo drug tests as they are also culpable if the government is to be serious about tackling issues around drug abuse.

“What do we do during our campaigns? I will suggest that those who seek elective offices undergo a drug test. Some of our political leaders are into drug abuse. Let’s go through the test and see who is who.

“As I am speaking now, most of our offices in our constituencies, most of our political offices, most of our houses, when you go there you will find mountains of drugs.”

“Mr President, we need to be serious. There are drug dealers in our offices and our houses.I am immune to talk, I am in the chamber of the senate and I can take you to some of the political leaders who are in so many ways contributing to drug abuse. Mr President, we need to be serious,” he said.

Reacting, the Deputy Senate President, Barau I. Jibrin, however ruled him out of order.

“Your contribution is not relevant to the subject matter,” Jibrin countered.
