Daddy, please take me to the Titanic

Adogbo’s son, Obi, had watched the film, Titanic. Since then, he talks about great films he has watched and places he had been to, especially during the holidays.  Of course, he had been to the cinema. He had been to the children’s park and other exciting places. Obi is six years old and very witty. He makes fun out of everything. The father often berates him and says that he is too playful.

His own version of the Titanic film shocked his father. There was so much embellishments and exaggeration. This older brother, Ik, who had watched with him wondered how little Obi had made up such stories from the film.

He had woken up to say that he had this distinct feeling of a rocking boat. “I was laying in my bed but it felt as if I was on a rocking ship. I also got very afraid and felt like the house was sinking on the water,” he told Ik.

“Ahhh, in that your small room?”

“Yes na. It was in the afternoon, when I got back from school, I wanted to sleep but when I laid down, something was drawing me on the bed. It looked like that Titanic ship.”

“And I called your name, Ik, Ik, but you were not there. But this Easter season, I want daddy to take me to watch it again.”

His brother is also as smart as he. He already knew the direction of Obi’s narrative. He wanted to be taken for an outing this period. He knew that their mummy would never listen to him.

She has been talking about cutting down on some unnecessary expenditure. Going out for this Easter season is limited to visits to family and friends. Their mother hasn’t recovered from the robbery attack on her in February.

Now, this is Easter is a season of visitation, sharing and merriment as far as the children are concerned. It doesn’t matter to them whether or not parents are financially buoyant. For the Adagbo’s children, going out during the festive season has been a tradition since childhood. So, no one can justify why little Obi shouldn’t be taken to the cinema to watch his favourite movies.

Now, the issue is where can you take your children to this period?

The children are home! And sometimes, it is quite tasking for parents to keep their children entertained. This is the Easter weekend/holidays. From cinemas to amusement parks and parties, there is an array of destinations that will make their holidays quite memorable.

Swimming – The weather is hot and the electricity company doesn’t help matters.

You could take the children swimming. It is fun and also a good form of exercise but be careful. Look for a good hotel with swimming pool for kids and a life guard. Remember, you would need plenty of food or snacks because swimming could make them famished.

Excursions – It is not only the school that can take them on excursions. You can take them to excursions. The zoo is a great place for sight-seeing. If you live in Lagos, Plateau, Bauchi, Ibadan or Imo-states, they all have functional zoos.

 Game Arcades:

Children cannot get enough of this. There is enough of virtual reality games that transport children to a whole new world where they can see dinosaurs and be super heroes themselves. Game Arcades are found in most malls. You pay a certain amount for each session. Be ready to hear screams and shouts as the children circumvent through virtual reality. It is an adrenaline adventure!!!

 Artistic creations:

Stock up crayons, water colours and papers for them. Let them draw and paint for fun. You will be amazed at what your kids will create. Of course, make sure it is done outside the living rooms and be sure to wear them aprons or overalls in preparation to becoming future Picassos.

 Gardening:

If you love gardening and flowers, you can also use this opportunity to teach the young ones how to do so it. Catch them young, they say. Pass on the knowledge. Teach them the need to grow flowers and trees for our ecosystem. Let them learn how to water plants and flowers. Turn a chore to a fun activity!

Young chefs:

Bring out a day for baking; let them knead, mix and design those snacks they enjoy so much.

Let them bake a surprise cake for daddy when he comes home from work…Believe it, it a whole day’s work and they’ll definitely enjoy mummy out in the kitchen. Remember to be safety conscious. Wear them gloves and aprons for this culinary exercise.

Fun reading:

Stock up your children’s library with latest exciting children’s books and novels. You can also take them to reading festivals. I am sure there are a few holding this season. Make them read it and tell you what they learnt from it. Let it be an open fun discussion so that they  don’t feel  they are back in their classrooms. Remember,  it’s a holiday !!!

Play Parks:

Some states have safe parks where children can go and play. Endeavour to take them out to where they can run around and soak in the sunshine and exercise. Play on swings and scream and shout to their hearts fill.

Ice cream and candy bars:

Remember all children have sweet tooth and love sweet treats. Spoil them this holidays and take them to ice cream and candy bars for a sweet and pleasurable delight. Be ready to hear, “Mummy I want some more!”

The Beach:

Holidays are never complete without a trip to the beach. Selfies time, horse riding, water games, and beach volley. And building castles in the sand never goes out of trends

Now, little Obi can have fun, not only by seeing the Titanic movies but there’s a whole delightful bunch for every kid. Give them a memorable time.
