COVID-19: I haven’t resigned my appointment – Maurice Iwu

The Imo State Chairman of Task Force on the Coronavirus, Prof. Maurice Iwu, has denied reports making the rounds that he had resigned his appointment with state government.

The former national chairman of INEC told newsmen, in Owerri, shortly after his committee meeting held at Odenigbo Governor’s Lodge.

According to him, “You have seen me here seating down with the committee members.

“If I have resigned, I would not be here briefing you journalists on the activities of the committee.”

Prof. Iwu, who confirmed that there was no cases of the virus, in Imo State, described it as a serious war that requires everyone to rise up to the challenges in order to overcome it

He revealed the commitment of the committee to tackle the dreaded disease adding that the 80 per cent of what has been done already by the committee is on prevention of the virus.

He commended the National Centre for Dieases Control (NCDC), the African Network, for being helpful to the committee while thanking the Governor Hope Uzodinma for listening to them all the time.

As a measure to tackle the spread of the virus in the state, Prof. Iwu revealed efforts by the committee to reach out to the 27 council transition chairmen in the state to be up and doing in their respective areas.

He used the opportunity to appeal to sons and daughters and every citizens of the state including in-laws to the state to support government fight against the Coronavirus disease through their individual donation of cash.

According to him, the state government was already deploying every arsenal within its reach to fight the disease, while calling on every one to join hands for the good of the state.

He commended those that had donated both cash and materials to the state government such as Seplat and WaterSmith oil firm operating in the state.

The Task Force Committee chairman disclosed plans by the committee to get the Fancy Hotel de-conterminated.

He confirmed the release of both the staff and guests of the hotel by the state government after their 14 days they were quarantined in the hotel without any manifestation of the disease in their body.
