Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has clashed with the state’s police command over modalities for combating the spread of the Coronavirus the state.
The police had shut all markets in the state and set up food markets in designated locations across the 179 communities in the state.
However, Governor Obiano reversed the police order following complaints of food sellers that the food markets were not convenient for them.
Governor Obiano explained that the step taken by the police would encourage congestion instead of promoting social distancing and ordered the traders to return to the original markets.

In a statement, the state government said: “Anambra State social distance proactive measure in the relocation of food items market to all fields/stadiums in the 21 local government areas of the state has now been cancelled by our governor.
“The governor further stated that the introduction of field/stadium market will bring about congestion and defeat the primary aim of social distancing.
“Governor Obiano directed that all traders dealing on food items should return to their various original market sites from 8:00am to 3:00pm daily till further directive is communicated.”
Confirming the development, the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C. Don Adinuba, stated: “We have asked food sellers to return to their original markets.”
