Three indigenous Rivers Sons contesting for Ohanaeze Ndigbo Presidential election to be held later in January 2025 have insisted that the position must be reserved for Rivers indigenes.

The three contestants include Dr Omenazu Jackson, Chief Fyneface Amechi and Dim Uchechukwu Okwukwu.

Speaking with journalists yesterday in Port Harcourt, they called on Chief Mike Okiro, a native of Obiokpu Community of Imo State to step aside for the contest of Ohanaeze Ndigbo presidential general seat zoned to Rivers State.

Speaking further, the contestants frowned at what they describe as an attempt to shortchange them by a non-Rivers man.

They alleged that “Chief Mike is on a mission to cause crisis by attempting to take what belongs to Rivers people back to Imo State who just concluded her tenure”.

The contestants explained that Chief Okiro hail from Ogwumankwu village, Obiakpu community, Egbema, Ohaji/Egbema LGA, Imo State, therefore he did not qualified to contest based on zoning modality.

“His age grade is OTU EGOBUEZE and their secretary is Christopher Nze Umezuruike. Other members of his age grade are Chief Clement Mmata, Mr. Owuamala Stephen and Chief Toke Gilbert etc.

“His late younger brother, Eze Ozoemela Okiro was the traditional ruler of Obiakpu community Egbema, Imo State and was a member of the traditional council under Gov. Udenwa; that Chief Okiro was the special Adviser to former Gov. Rochas on security matters.”

They questioned how chief Mike’s biological parents and brothers would be from Imo State while he is a Rivers man as he allegedly claimed.

The Rivers contestants however, called on Ohanaeze Ndigbo to preserve their integrity and prestige so as to avoid any reputational damage to the well respected image of the group.

They asked that “Chief Okiro should not be allowed to contest this time is Rivers turn”, therefore, vowed to resist any attempt to shortchange them for non-Rivers man in disguise as in his days in the Nigerian police force. We will not allow that repeat itself”.
