A contender to the stool of Zazzau Emirate of Kaduna State, Bashir Aminu (Iyan Zazzau), has died of COVID-19 complications.

Aminu’s death came six days after he clocked 70 years and on the heels of announcement on Friday by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) that Nigeria had recorded fresh 1074 new Covid-19 cases.

With the new numbers, Nigeria now has a total of 88,587 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 1,294 deaths.

According to the NCDC, Lagos and Kaduna states topped the list with 642 and 92 new cases, respectively.

Others are: Rivers-78; FCT-66; Gombe-66; Kano-35; Ogun-31; Katsina-22; Plateau-20; Abia-7; Niger and Oyo-4 each; Akwa Ibom-3; Delta and Osun-2, respectively.

Aminu and one other prince, Abubakar Pate (Talban Zazzau), reportedly died within 24 hours barely three months after the death of the former Emir of Zazzau, Shehu Idris.

Already, President Muhammadu Buhari has in a statement by his media adviser, Garba Shehu, condoled with the bereaved families, the Zazzau Emirate Council and  the Government and people of Kaduna State, describing the sad incidents as double tragedy and prayed “Allah to forgive the gentle souls of the departed and reward their good deeds with paradise.”

Though the late Aminu (Iyan Zazzau), came tops from among contestants for the vacant Emir of Zazzau throne, scoring 89 per cent to beat Muhammadu Munir Ja’afaru (Yariman Zazzau), 87 per cent, and Aminu Idris (Turakin Zazzau), 53 per cent, after a stringent process, involving 11 princes from four dynasties, Governor Nasir El-Rufai did not pick any of the top contenders but instead appointed a former Nigerian Ambassador to Thailand, Ahmed Bamalli.
