Katsina State on Wednesday commenced its community policing with 554 special constables.
The special constables just passed out from premier police college in Kaduna.
The state commissioner of police, Sanusi Buba on Wednesday addressed the special constables at the police headquarters, Katsina, where he urged them to be upright, discipline and upright.
The special constables will wear full police black uniform with blue background at the cap badge, shoulder strap, and under the name tag. They will also not carry firearms.
They are to be deployed for simple police routine duties such as crowd control, traffic and patrol duties.”
The spokesman for the Katsina police command, SP Gambo Isah, in a statement on Wednesday said Buba told the special constables that they had the full powers and privileges of police officers.
“He (The police commissioner) stated that as they will go back to their respective communities to help in reducing crime,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, said his administration will support the newly trained 272 constables to rid the state of criminal elements.
The 272 constables were trained for community policing across the 23 local government areas of the state.
At the graduation of the 272 constables in the state capital, El-Rufai, represented by the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, said, “We will appeal to local government chairmen to support you.
