Christmas Day tragedy: Women Society demands justice for Omobolanle Raheem

Razaq Bamidele

An all-women Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Standup for Women Society (SWS), has called on the Federal Government to ensure that justice prevail on the gruesome murder of a female lawyer, Barr. Omobolanle Raheem who was gunned down in cold blood by a trigger happy policeman in Ajah axis of Lagos on Christmas day, Sunday, December 25, 2022.

The demand for justice for the slain lawyer was contained in a statement signed by the NGO’s National President, Barr. (Mrs.) Deborah Ijadele-Adetona and made available to the media Tuesday in Lagos through the group’s National Publicity Secretary, Billie Nwogu.

The statement expressed sadness and displeasure that Barrister Raheem, a learned colleague who was also a member of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), could be gunned down with flimsy excuse by a police officer who is being paid to protect her, saying it was unfortunate, sad and disgusting that those who should protect life are now taking it with reckless abandon!

Ijadele-Adetona therefore called on the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba to make sure the killer gets appropriate punishment to serve as deterrent to others and ensure the family of the deceased also gets compensated adequately even though life cannot be returned to the dead.

She, therefore, called on the Nigerian President and Heads of security to train security personnel like police on how to handle guns in a decent society like ours, regretting that it has become a common occurrence for police to kill and blame it on the accidental discharge of arms. This, according to her, is unprofessional and should be condemned by all relevant quarters.

“The young woman who was pregnant met her untimely death due to nonchalant attitude of a police officer whose primary assignment is to make sure people are protected. What is happening to our nation?” Adetona queried!

Recall that, at about 5 pm on that fateful Sunday, when everyone was celebrating the Christmas holiday, the Lagos Police Command Commissioner, Abiodun Alabi said he received the sad news of the killing of Raheem by an officer of the Nigerian Police Force under the Jubilee Bridge at Ajah, Lagos State.

Barr. Deborah has joined other human rights activists and civil societies in the call to ensure justice prevails without delay.
