Award-winning writer, Chimamanda Adichie, has mocked agitators for Biafra republic among the Igbo, wondering how it would be possible when the ethnic stock cannot even unite and bid for Nigeria’s presidency.
She expressed her views while speaking with Nigerian lawyer and media personality, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, and ruled out the existence of Biafra
“There is no Biafra. There are new movements. But for me, it’s a question of being practical. Where would the border be? What is propelling these movements is a sense of marginalisation, which I think is completely valid,” Adichie insisted.
“Quite frankly, I’ve observed the terrible leadership that we have in the South-east. Igbo people cannot unite. If for example, we say we want an Igbo president, why then are we talking about Biafra? There is a lot of political work we need to do in the South-east.”
According to her, the Igbo needed to rejig their political strategy to survive to be able to remain relevant and achieve their dream.
“We need to do a lot of rethinking on how we can strategise politically before we can talk about Biafra,” she said.
