A 30-year-old caregiver identified as kabiru Wasiu was charged before an Ikeja Domestic violence Court, Lagos, for allegedly raping two women. Both victims, aged 17 years and 30years respectively are suffering from Down Syndrome.
The caregiver and a teacher to persons with Down Syndrome was arraigned on three count charge of sexual assault by penetration, rape and defilement of a child.
However, the defendant denied the charges preferred against him.
The state prosecutor, Ms. Inumidun Solarin, had accused the defendant of committing the offences sometime in 2018 at the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria’s Hotel, located at No. 43, Adegoke Street, Masha, Surulere, Lagos.

According to her, the accused did not only have sexual intercourse with the 17-year-old girl, “he also sexually assaulted her by inserting his penis into her anus.”
Furthermore, the prosecutor also told the court that the defendant on another occasion was alleged to have raped a 30-year-old woman with Down Syndrome by having unlawful sexual intercourse with the woman without her consent.
Justice Sybil Nwaka in her ruling ordered that the defendant should be remanded at the Correctional Centre and adjourned the case to May 14, 2020 for trial.
