Bayero University Kano (BUK) has launched an On-campus Students Job Scheme whereby the institution would engage some of its students would be assigned various tasks, including monitoring and supervision of the university’s facilities, cleanliness, and menial jobs.
BUK’s deputy Registrar, Lamara Garba, disclosed this in a statement, on Sunday, in Kano, News Agency of Nigeria reports.
The university’s vice-chancellor, Sagir Abbas, who launched the scheme distribute engagement letters to 125 students, saying the scheme would improve students’ welfare.
“Each student will get N15,000 monthly, subject to being cleared by his/her supervisor, after meeting the necessary requirements,” Garba quoted the VC, who urged the students to protect the university, as saying.
He also disclosed plans underway to establish Student’s Skills Acquisition Centre and noted that it will train students on entrepreneurial skills when fully operational.
He said: “The centre which will be free of charge to any interested student will enable students to learn some trade like tailoring, make-up, beauty salon and others. That will go a long way in helping the students to be self-reliant, particularly after graduation.”
