Buhari renames 15 airports after self, Awolowo, Akintola, Okadigbo, others

Fifteen airports across the country were renamed by former President Muhammadu Buhari before he left office.
The airports were named after the late sage, Chef Obafemi Awolowo, Samuel Ladoke Akintola and 12 other prominent Nigerians.
The approval for the renaming was given by the former President, on Friday.

He explained that the renaming was in recognition of the contribution of the prominent Nigerians to the development of the nation in different sectors.
The approval was contained in a statement, in Abuja, by the Head of Press and Public Affairs of the Ministry of Aviation, Odutayo Oluseyi.

The affected airports are: “Port Harcourt International Airport now Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport ; Ibadan International Airport now Samuel Ladoke Akintola International Airport; Ebonyi International Airport now Chuba Wilberforce Okadigbo International Airport; Maiduguri International Airport now Muhammadu Buhari International Airport and Ilorin International airport now Gen. Tunde Abdulbaki Idiagbon International Airport.

Others were, Akure International Airport now Olumuyiwa Bernanrd Aliu International Airport; Benin International Airport now Oba Akinzua II International Airport; Dutse International Airport now Muhammad Nuhu Sanusi International Airport; Gombe International Airport now Brig. Zakari Maimalari International Airport; Kaduna International Airport now Gen. Hassan Usman Katsina International Airport; Makurdi International Airport now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka International Airport; Minna International Airport now Mallam Abunakar Imam International Airport; Nasarawa International Airport now Sheikh Usam Danfodio International Airport, Osubi International Airport now Alfred Diete Spiff International Airport and Yola International Airport now Lamido Aliyu Mustapha International Airport .
Buhari also approved the constitution of boards for the agencies under the aviation ministry.
He explained that the boards are institutional representations.
