Some aggrieved youths have poured onto the streets of Niger State to protest the harsh economic conditions in the country.
This is coming ahead of the August 1 date proposed for the nationwide protests and in spite of pleas from the government, and efforts to dissuade them.
The protesters, who stormed the streets on Monday, were chanting anti-government songs and wielded placards, bearing inscriptions, such as ‘Enough is Enough’; ‘Stop Anti-Masses Policies’; ‘We Are Not Slaves In Our Country’; ‘Hardship Is Unbearable’, ‘Fuel Subsidy Must Be Back’, among others.
Recall that Governor Mohammed Bago in a bid to woo the residents of Niger and prevent the protests, had announced some welfare packages.
To ameliorate the current economic hardship, Bago had announced a N20,000 wage allowance for state and local government civil servants, ordered the immediate release of 50,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains to be sold at subsidised rates.
More to come…
