Breaking: kidnapped doctor, regains freedom after 10 months

After ten months in captivity, Doctor Ganiyat Popoola, has breathed the air of freedom.

The female doctor, who is a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna State,
was abducted on December 27, 2023, alongside her husband, Nurudeen Popoola, and her nephew, Folaranmi Abdul-Mugniy.

Following negotiations, the abductors released her husband on March 8, 2024, but held on to Ganiat and Abdul-Mugniy.

However, the President of Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Tope Osundara, on Wednesday confirmed that the duo had been released.

“Yes, it is true. It happened today (Wednesday). For now, we have insulated her away from people, we only allow very limited access to her,” Osundara told Daily Trust, adding, however, that no ransom was paid to secure her release.
