Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered immediate demolition of two major markets on Lagos Island; the Bombata and Jankara markets over the blockage of the drainages, presence of squatters and their illegal activities in the market.
The governor, who visited the markets on Sunday while on the drainage and regeneration tour of Lagos Island in company of the Commissioner for Environment. Tokunbo Wahab, was angered by the deplorable state of the markets due to blocked drainages caused by the dumping of refuse in the drainage by the traders.
Governor Sanwo-Olu who was miffed at the development issued a notice to all the illegal squatters and those that are doing illegal activities there that the government will clean up the entire markets starting with Bombata and Jankara markets and bring them to ground zero.

At the Pelewura market, the governor said because of its large number of traders , the government would give them adequate notice and work with concessionaires, local government and relevant stakeholders for them to agree on the date the demolition of the Pelewura market and evacuation of traders would commence.
He warned that his administration would no longer tolerate blocking of drainage by traders.
“The Ministry of the Environment will start giving demolition notices to all of the stores that have been built on the drainages. They have all built shops on it and that is why we are having this problem of flooding and we cannot let a few people risk the life of a larger number of us. We will not accept anyone to destroy government infrastructure,” he said.
The governor also inspected the Ilubirin Housing Project to ascertain the level of work done on the pumping station.

He said the delay in completing the project which has been on for almost two years was because of the depth of work that has to be done on the station.
Sanwo- Olu further said the drainage channel has to be completely changed to a proper drainage infrastructure of 6 meters by 1.2 meter to allow for proper discharging of water from tne estate when completed.
He added three pumping stations of five tons each have been sunk and the project is 85 percent completed, promising drainage work would be completed by the end of this year.
” We will continue to work and I am sure by December when we come back here, this project will have been completed,” he assured.
