Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has urged tradesmen and artisans in the state to bring new innovations to their businesses and develop their skills using technology in their respective trades.

The governor spoke at the 12th graduation ceremony for 1,200 upskilled artisans, held at the Blue Roof, Agidingbi, Ikeja, on Tuesday.

He said his administration has given hope and opportunity to the tradesmen to thrive and charged them to imbibe technology in developing their trade.

To further show his administration’s support for artisans, the governor announced an increase in the annual subvention for the Lagos State Council of Tradesmen and Artisans, LA COSTA, from N6 million to N15 million. He also announced the donation of a brand new bus.

Sanwo-Olu emphasized the importance of training in improving efficiency and effectiveness within their trades, with the aim of empowering artisans to become employers of labour.

He also urged them to create jobs by training other Lagosians noting that by creating more jobs and opportunities within their sectors, artisans would help reduce unemployment in the state.

He warned them against giving their money to pastors and Imams as well as avoid spending it on frivolities.

“You will create opportunities and help reduce unemployment. We will provide you with equipment to help you create even bigger opportunities for yourselves. Keep learning, develop yourself, and always strive to be a role model, others should learn from you”, the governor stated.

The governor further encouraged artisans to take advantage of the state’s Employment Trust Fund, which offers loans at a reduced interest rate of no more than 5% annually, to help expand their businesses.

In his remarks, Akinyele Akingbotafe, the state commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, explained that the training was designed to equip artisans with the technical skills needed to enhance their productivity and introduce innovative practices into their work.

He urged the participants to maintain a positive outlook on their professions and contribute to the economic growth of the state, while also commending the governor for his ongoing support and the growth of his ministry.
