Bayelsa govt, United Airlines, Chinese contractors, others send relief materials to Bayelsa IDPs camps

Although the Federal Government is yet to send any relief materials to flood victims in Bayelsa State, some corporate bodies have continued to respond to efforts to tackling the ravaging flood.

As efforts by the Bayelsa State Task Force on Flood, Mitigation and Management headed by Mr. Iselema Gbaranbiri, has ensured more relief materials purchased from Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital,, arrived to alleviate the sufferings of the people.

Organisations and well-meaning individuals have continued to respond to the plight of the flood ravaged state.

Speaking to journalists at the Ox-Bow Lake jetty Yenagoa where items like garri, rice, beans and palm oil among others were received from local Cargo boat, MV OKPOAMA BRASS local  boat brought relied materials into OX- Bow Lake IDP camp at about 5:00pm, on Monday.

Mr. Gbaranbiri, who is also Bayelsa State’s Commissioner For Environment, explained that  the food items have to be transported through the sea due to effect of the flood on the East/West road Axis.

According to him, aside the food items and two square meals provided for those at the IDPs, camps, water, treated mosquito nets and medical services are also available to handle health challenges.

Mr. Gbaranbiri  informed that while Yenagoa, Kolokuma/ Opokuma, Ekeremor, Sagbama and Ogbia local government areas have received their portions of the items,  presently, relief materials are sent to Southern Ijaw local government area while Nembe and Brass will be the next to receive.

Among the relief materials received through the boat were those donated by the  Chinese Construction company ( CCC&C) handling some road contracts in the state .

The Task Force Chairman disposed that the federal is yet to make any donation apart from some old mats sent in from.NEMA.

‘ The new pronouncement from.Mr. President have not brought anything, we have not seen any” he added.

Earlier, at the Heliport Igbogene, Yenagoa, another set of food items procured by the Bayelsa State Government from Lagos, were received by the Flood Committee through the help of the Nigerian Air Force.

Operators of the United Nigeria  Airlines also procured and presented relief items to host communities of  the Bayelsa state Airport. The items were received by the Task Force and handed over to the  management of the Airport for equitable distribution to the host Communities which included Amassoma .

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) also donated relief materials which included  several bags of rice, garri, water, mosquitos quells.

The INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba who led other INC members to IDP camp  handed over the items to the head of the Camp, Mrs. Koku Obiyai.
