Reports reaching The Nigerian Xpress says Yahaya Bello, former governor of Kogi State has been arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to the report, confirmed by EFCC sources, Bello was taken into custody following a midnight sting operation in Lokoja.
However, there are contrary reports suggesting that Bello voluntarily surrendered himself to the anti graft agency.
“Bello was reportedly tracked and arrested at midnight. He is now in custody at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja,” an EFCC source said.
But a statement from Ohiare Michael, Director of Yahaya Bello’s Media Office, insists that the embattled former governor willingly appeared before the EFCC after consulting with his legal team and family.
Michael said Bello, who has consistently advocated for transparency during his tenure, was committed to clearing his name in the ongoing investigation.
Bello, who has been on the run from the EFCC is accused of using his office as Kogi State Governor to launder over N80 billion belonging to the state.
All efforts to get him to answer to the charges have remained abortive.
