Yoruba group tasks Tinubu on security

A pan-nationality political organisation, Alliance of Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM), a coalition of 121 pan-Yoruba civil society and artisan groups has, in a statement, in Lagos State, urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, to take insecurity as one of his most important focal points as he resumed in Aso Rock. The statement was signed by the group’s General Secretary, Comrade Popoola Ajayi.

The AYDM is spread across Lagos, Ogun, Osun, Oyo, Kwara, Edo, Delta, Kogi, Ondo and Ekiti States.

“Your first point of call as the new President should be to deal with insecurity because without safety, no country can make any progress,” the group asserted, just at it regretted the over 200 people killed in Mangu Local Government of Plateau state last week suspecting that the killings confirming armed gangsters and terrorism are yet to abate across Nigeria.

The group which also congratulated Tinubu and millions of Nigerians on the smooth transition being the 6th since 1999 when Africa’s most populous country returned to democratic rule after years of military dictatorship added that the transition was a remarkable moment and a dream come true.

“Like millions of Yoruba across the world, we felicitate with Asiwaju Bola Tinubu on this historic moment as he takes over the reign of Nigeria as the President and Commander-Chief of the Armed Forces,” Ajayi wrote.

The group therefore expressed optimism that Tinubu’s administration would be a turning point in the life of Nigerians who have had to endure harsh economic melt-down ahead of the last February Presidential 25 election.

“Thousands of people have been killed by non-state actors and also by security operatives. To reclaim confidence, Tinubu needs to focus on insecurity and tackle the problem immediately,” the group admonished.

“This is a dream come true. Certainly, you did not achieve this feat per chance but through the combined results of over three decades of conscientious and diligent and hard work which have paid off,” the Coalition said stating that, “we have no doubt about your capacity and capability to take the Nigerians out of the present precarious hunger, insecurity as hundreds are being murdered daily by bandits and terrorists across the country, the unending power and energy crisis, huge housing gap, lack of access to medical care, cultism, drug abuse by the youths and corruption in all the facets of our national life bearing in mind your antecedent and track records. For us as a movement is to urge you to quickly put in motion efforts that will lead to the restructuring of the country to pave the way for the autonomy for government formation at subnational level.

“It is our fervent belief that if you failed to devote the required energy to devolution of powers to regions or states, no matter your lofty achievements you will end up being vilified and your efforts brutally reversed after your reigns. Therefore, history will write your name with an indelible ink if you take the bull by the horns by resolving the national question without minding whose ox is gored”
The coalition also congratulates all elected officials across our catchment area especially Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and pray God to continue to guide and continue to give him the strength to confront the challenges of the responsibilities of his high office.
It will be recalled the AYDM at its delegate conference in October 2022 where over 2000 delegates from Kogi, Kwara, Ondo, Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ogun, Delta and Akoko Edo adopted Tinubu as the most qualified among the countants for the presidency of the country and promised to mobilise for his electoral victory.
