Women’s group throws weight behind female gubernatorial candidate in Bauchi State

A Women’s  Group in Bauchi State has expressed support for a female Governorship Candidate in the state, Hajiya Baheejah Mahmood of the Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD).

The group, “Mata Masu kare Yancin Jihar Bauchi (Women for the Protection of Interest of Bauchi State) promised to vote for Mahmood, the only female candidate in the governorship poll.

The women thronged the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ secretariat in Bauchi on Thursday to express their support for Mahmood.

Addressing journalists, the leader of the group, Mrs Fatima Umar, said the political conduct of male politicians is that they concentrate efforts and attention on identifying the mistakes of their opponents.

“The male politicians deliberately turn away from issues and concentrate on personalities. Their political parties are not communicating meaningfully to the electorate.

“They are not selling new ideas or new policies rather, they keep making empty promises concerning problems which ought to have been addressed and most of these problems are caused by male dominated leaders.

“We have endured enough of male dominated politics that always leaves us stagnant with only fake promises that do not solve our problems and will not address our fundamental and basic needs as human beings,” Umar said.

She alleged that the people of Bauchi State were not likely to get issue based campaigns from the male dominated candidates as they were only engrossed in unviable side attractions that might not augur well or solve the problems facing the citizens.

“As mothers and daughters, we always feel the pain of the situation and living conditions of our populace, knowing that the people of Bauchi deserve something extraordinary which will make their lives better.

“Instead of the usual salaries and gratuities that sometimes are not even regular, genuine, well planned and executed, programmes geared toward eradicating poverty, unemployment and ensuring regular supply of water and electricity will be a welcome idea.

The “attitudes of male dominated candidates clearly expose their shortcomings and show that they are not prepared to give effective leadership.

“Today, the time has come when women can aspire and occupy political positions to effect good governance and provide exemplary leadership since the male dominated counterparts have failed,” she said. (NAN)
