An 18-months-old baby girl was, on Monday, killed by her mother, Adisa Funmilola, 22, at their Gowon Estate apartment in Lagos State.
Funmilola, it was learnt, drowned her own baby in a bucket of water because she claimed the baby stood in her way of actualising her dream of becoming a lawyer.
According to the suspect who was arrested for the murder by the Gown Estate Police Division, her ordeal started years back when she got pregnant while attending tutorial clases for her JAMB examination.
The suspect said she passed the exam and gained admission into the Obafemi Awolowo University to study Law, but lost the opportunity because she was pregnant.

While still nursing the pain of losing such an opportunity, Funmilola said frustration set in when she started seeing her friends who were making progress in their academics.
Narrating her ordeal, the suspect, who was not remorseful for her action said, “That baby deprived me of actualising my dream of becoming a lawyer.
“I had to drown her inside a bucket filled with water on Monday. Thereafter, I reported myself at the Gowon estate division.
“The police did not come immediately but when they did, they found the dead baby inside the bucket.
“I was impregnated by a boy who attended same JAMB lesson with me. But he rejected the pregnancy.
“I wanted to abort the pregnancy but my father said no. I passed my JAMB and was offered admission to study Law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, but I had to defer the admission because of the baby.
“I wanted to take her to the orphanage home at first, when it became difficult to take care of her.
“I live with my sister who has no job and I am also not working. I felt there was no use keeping her since I could not take care of her. I killed her because I was frustrated. ”
The matter was transferred to the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja, on Tuesday.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu, was briefed on the matter, and directed that Fumilola be transfered to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Yaba.
Elder sister of the suspect, expressed shock over the incident. She said she could not believe that her younger sister could commit such crime.
She said ” I suspect she is gradually developing mental problem. Our mother had same mental problem before she died. We live in the same apartment but have our separate bedrooms. I didn’t know when she drowned the baby, until the police arrived.”
Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, Elkana Bala, confirmed the arrest of the suspect.
Bala said, “She is in custody, she will be charged to court. ”
