The Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has washed its hands off a planned protest by members of the transport union in  in the state.

A viral message had warned members of the public on the likelihood of breakdown of law and order as a result of the planned protest against recent developments in the state union.

“We have information of an intending protest tomorrow by the National Road Transport Union, Lagos Branch. Going by the past record of the union and its members, the protest could be very violent, especially around Ilupeju, Mushin, Mile 12, Ajah, and Lagos Island. Staff members are hereby advised to be on red alert and avoid there mentioned hot spots,” the message read.

However, the NURTW Secretary in the state, Oluwaseyi Bankole, debunked the purported protest, saying there was no such plan by its members, as they would obey the directives of the state governor.

“Our attention has been drawn to a protest rumored to be from the members of the NURTW of the Lagos State Chapter,” Bankole said.

“We want to categorically tell the general public that this is not true and that the people that are supposedly protesting are not recognised nor legal members of our union because we are abiding by the order given by the Governor of Lagos State.

“The general public is therefore advised to go about their daily activities without fear and whosoever that is found disturbing the peace and order in the state should be dealt with accordingly.”

Crisis had engulfed the transport union in the state with the query issued the state chairman, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo,  by the national body over a alleged  insubordination.

MC Oluomo’s reply, denying the accusations was considered inadequate hence his suspension, following which he pulled the Lagos chapter out of the national body, putting the state on edge for fear of breakdown of law and order.
