Water scarcity in Lokoja over soon, says Board

The General Manager, Kogi State Water Board (KSWB), Mr Sagir Abdulsalam, says normal water supply will be restored to Lokoja and its environs within the next 48 hours.

Abdulsalam gave the assurance on Tuesday in Lokoja while giving an update on the ongoing repair works at the Greater Lokoja Waterworks.

The Greater Lokoja Waterworks had been shut down again as a result of electrical and mechanical faults.

The waterworks is the main source of water to Lokoja and its environs.

It has the capacity to supply 60 million litres of treated water per day.

“The sudden failure of a flange material on one of the pumps occurred in the evening of April 13 when treated water was being pushed to Ganaja Junction over head tank.

“Another burst also occurred on the main pipe which had earlier been fixed. As a result of this, supply to Lokoja and the environ has been disrupted,’’ he explained

He, however, assured that the electrical fault was almost 90 per cent resolved, while work was nearing completion on the mechanical fault.

Abdulsalam who conducted newsmen round the plant said that four of the high lift pumps needed to pump out water were ready, while the failed sections of the main pipe had been welded and coated.

The general manager, who is also the head of a technical team set up by the government to handle the repair works, said that the problems confronting the waterworks had been contained, assuring that water supply would be restored soon.

According to him, the management of the board has been working with the Abuja Electricity Power Distribution Company on how to get constant power supply to the water treatment plant.

“Aside this, another 1000 KVA power generating set has been put on standby,” Abdulsalam said.

He thanked the residents for their support and understanding, saying that the water scarcity would soon be a thing of the past. (NAN)
