Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has decried the high illiteracy rate in the State insisting that the government has put mechanism in place to tackle the menace headlong.
In a similar vein, Umahi has announced the appointment of 385 Aides comprising Coordinators of Development Centers, Executive Assistants , Senior Technical Assistants and Technical Assistants respectively.
Umahi expressed his disappointment on the illiteracy level on Monday while addressing newly appointed Development Center Cordinators, stakeholders, opinion leaders, leaders of Thought on their line of duty at a meeting convened by the state government held at the Akanu Ibiam International Conference Center Abakaliki.

According to him,”Our illiteracy rate in Ebonyi State is the highest in the South-East geo-political zone of the country. It is unacceptable”
He said that the Government would in due course appoint a total of 900 Executive Assistants. Senior Technical Assistants and Technical Assistants respectively.
The State Chief Executive tasked Coordinators of Development Centers to supervise both schools in their constituency and Primary Health Centers in addition to injecting School Sports and Agricultural practices.
“Coordinators must do Documentation by profiling the number of schools, Health Centers, our people need Attitudinal Change to make progress”
He tasked the newly appointed Coordinators of Development Centers and other aides to strive and
tackle the menace of Out – of School Children insisting that this forms the Certificate for confirmation of Coordinators.”
“Every Development Center Coordinator must locate 50 out- of -school children, enrol them in schools, the government will buy free books. Uniforms for them’
” Each Development Center all be given Two milion naira (N2 million) to be used in fishing this out- of -school children and enroll them back in school”
Umahi said that the Government will monitor this children to make sure they do not come out of school.
” By the end of September 2019, Development Center Coordinators and Stakeholders would meet and review the names of this Out -of-school children to be submitted to government by October”
He said that the 171 electoral wards in the state will nominate three persons to be appointed as Technical Assistants that would bring the number to 900 aides.
The Governor reiterated that his administration would give priority to the empowerment of youths stating “this government is for youths, it’s ascension for the youths, we must catch them young” he concluded.
