Two men jailed for using military uniforms to steal

A Dutse Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja on Tuesday sentenced Habu John, 32 and Innocent Solomon, 30, to six months imprisonment each for wearing military uniforms to steal motorcycles from their riders.

The Presiding Officer, Mr Suleiman Mohammed, who tried and found the suspects guilty however, gave them an fine option of N30, 000 each.

Mohammed held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced the convicts to six months imprisonment each.

He also warned them to be of good behaviour, adding that if they appeared before the court for any offence again, the court would not hesitate to be stringent on its punishment.

The convicts, both of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to a four-count-charge of joint act, attempt to commit an offence, theft and unauthorized wearing of uniforms used by public servants.

They both pleaded the court to tender justice with mercy and promised to avoid being troublesome.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Mrs Idowu Ojo told the court that one Patience Goddy of Yarima village in Bwari, reported the matter at the Bwari Police Station on April 6 by 10.40pm.

She explained that the suspects wore military uniforms which they used to stop commercial motorcyclists and snatch their motorcycles from them.

This, Ojo added, swept the policemen into action and apprehended the suspects after acquiring all information needed.

She also said that during investigation, the uniforms were recovered from the suspects.

Ojo noted that the offence, contravened Sections 79, 95, 287 and 133 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
