Tension in Ogun as student dies after lashing with 24 strokes of cane, did 162 frog jumps

 

 

A teacher in Obafemi Grammar School, in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State on Friday, has allegedly punished a student, who was identified as Ariyo Monday, to death.

The teacher was accused of flogging Monday 164 times and asked him to perform 162 frog jumps.

An activist, Justadetoun, in a video he posted online said the teacher had taken a trash can to Monday’s class and told the students not to break it but Monday retorted that the trashcan was bought with the students’ money.

Angered by his response, the teacher reported it to the principal, who told her to punish the Monday.

According to Justadetoun’s narratives, acting in the principal’s instruction, the deceased was given 164 lashes, which made him to collapse.

Ariyo was seen in the video, placed on a drip on the hospital bed, groaning in pain and struggling to speak.

Omolola Odutola, the police spokesperson, on Friday, confirmed the incident in the late hours of Friday, but added that contrary to the report, the deceased was beaten with 24 strokes of the cane and was made to do 162 frog jumps.

She said: “The incident happened on October 15, 2024. The deceased was asked to do 162 frog jumps and was given 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for medical attention, and he died today (Friday).”

Meanwhile, Ariyo’s corpse has been deposited at the Ayetoro mortuary for autopsy while waiting for the commencement of investigation into the cause of death.
