Teenagers drown in Lagos community beach

It was a black Easter celebration for residents of Epelemeje Orofun, in Akodo, Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos, as two teenagers had allegedly drowned while swimming in the community beach. 

The deceased persons simply identified as Dare, aged 16, and Fawas, aged 15, had gone to the beach with their friends to relax, when the tragic incident occurred. 

According to the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Elkana Bala, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Sunday, policemen from the marine police of the Lagos State Police Command,  are still searching for the bodies of the deceased persons. 

Bala said: “On April 11, at 3p.m., Police received a distress call that one Dare, a male, 16-year-old and Fawas, a male, 15-year-old, both residents of Epelemeje Orofun community, Akodo, Ibeju-lekki, allegedly got drowned while playing in the community beach. 

“The Command has deployed its Marine Police Team to the area on search and rescue operations. The Command advised parents to monitor their children and ensure that they remain at home during this lockdown period.”

Meanwhile, the Command has also arrested a tiler, and father of two, Adetayo Razaq, for reportedly defiling an eight-year-old girl (name withheld), at Ikorodu area. 

The 28-year-old suspect, a neighbour to the father of the survivor, had allegedly lured her to his room with a biscuit, where he had carnal knowledge of her. 

According to the PPRO, the matter was reported on April 9, by the father of the girl (name withheld), at the Ikorodu Police Station. 

Bala said: “A man from Gegenla Area, Agunfoye,  Ikorodu reported at Ikorodu Police Station that he returned home and met his eight-year-old daughter in pains, complaining  of discomfort and stomach aches. 

“The father left the girl with her two brothers ages 10 and 12,  as their parents are separated and living apart. On inquiry, she told her father that on March 31, one Adetayo Razaq, of Alladi Ijelu Street, Agunfoye, Ikorodu gave her biscuits and took her to his room where he had carnal knowledge of her.  

“The survivor was taken to hospital for treatment and forensic examination. The suspect was arrested by detectives from the Juvenile Welfare Centre, Ikorodu Police Station.”

The police spokesperson noted that the Commissioner of Police, CP Hakeem Odumosu had directed that the case be transferred to Gender Unit, Command Headquarters Ikeja, for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution.
