Stick to your 2nd term campaign promises, Abakaliki residents tell Umahi

Some residents of Abakaliki in Ebonyi State, have urged Governor Dave Umahi to fulfill his second term campaign promises to the people, as his inauguration approaches.

The residents spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abakaliki on their expectations from the incoming administration.

The residents expressed delight at the level of urban and rural roads infrastructure, economic empowerment and diversification and other landmark achievements in the first tenure of Umahi’s administration.

They appealed to the governor to uphold good governance and provide quality administration that would observe rule of law and separation of powers.

Mr Onyekachi Iboko, a Civil Servant in the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources, told NAN that the agricultural programme of the state government led to improved food production and more participation in agricultural activities in the state.

Iboko called on the governor to sustain the policy during his second term as food and social security were key in the reduction of criminal activities in any society.

“I want the governor to implement more human-oriented programmes in line with his campaign promises to give the people better live.

“I am happy that the governor was re-elected and I urge him to continue with his good works as he commences his second tenure from May 29.

“I am calling on him to respect his words and ensure that all the promises he made, including ensuring better welfare and working conditions for workers are achieved,’’ he said.

Mr Francis Ebenyi, a trader at the Abakpa Main Market in Abakaliki urged the governor to create more enabling environment for traders at the market to conduct their businesses.

“Multiple revenue collections from traders by those who claimed to be government revenue collection agents, have posed serious threats to people and we want the governor to look into the situation in his second term.

“He made a number of promises to the traders in the market when he came to campaign. I want him to remember those promises and ensure that he fulfills them,’’ Ebenyi said.

Mr. Jeremia Oyibe, Secretary, Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR), Ebonyi Chapter, said that the group would mobilise the people and other civil society organisations to hold the incoming government accountable.

Oyibe called on Umahi to look beyond party and ethnic considerations in appointing people that would work with him and serve the interest of the state in his new administration.

According to him, CDHR will ensure that every campaign promise made by the governor during the electioneering is fulfilled.

“We have the list of some of the promises and we are going to ensure that we mobilise the people and other like minds in the civil society community to hold this incoming administration accountable.

“We are also urging the governor to ensure that those who will be appointed into his new cabinet and other positions are those qualified and with track record of integrity.

“He must look beyond party and ethnic considerations in choosing those that will work with him in this second term,’’ he said. (NAN)
