Sokoto Assembly passes bill against extravagant weddings

The Sokoto State House of Assembly, on Tuesday, passed a bill to control extravagant spending on marriages, naming ceremonies and circumcision, among others across the state.

The bill, sponsored by members of the state Assembly namely, Hon. Abubakar Shehu and Hon. Faruk Balle, had been referred to the House Committee on Religious Affairs.

Hon. Shehu, who is the chairman of the committee, presented the report of the House Committee on Religious Affairs at plenary, stating that the committee met with necessary stakeholders who made positive contributions, some of which were captured in the bill.

After deliberations at the plenary, which was presided by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Abubakar Magaji, the bill was unanimously adopted and passed into law.
