Smuggler kills Customs officer in Kano

A rice smuggler has reportedly killed an officer serving with the Kano/Jigawa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NSC).

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Customs Command, Mr. Danbaba Isa, in Kano, quoted the Area Comptroller, Nasir Ahmed, as expressing bitterness over the incident while vowing to fish out the perpetrators of the crime.

The statement recalled that the officer was hit by a fast-moving car on January 31, 2019, while discharging his lawful duties.

The statement recalled that on January 26, 2019, some officers of the NCS including their headquarters’  Information Patrol team and the Command’s Roving Patrol team, were attacked by some criminals along Gwanmai village.

The statement explained that the suspected criminals inflicted serious injuries on the officers and vandalised their patrol vehicles at the same time.

According to his account, the attackers descended on the officers after accusing them of culpability in an accident that happened on the said road. He, however, added that the driver of the Customs vehicle had since denied responsibility for the accident.

The command expressed displeasure at the growing cases of lawless acts against its officers in the discharge of their duties even as it called on parents and stakeholders in the states under their charge to call their relatives to order.

The statement also regretted that the officers of the command have been subjected to increased threats in the hands of the smugglers and their accomplices in recent times.

The statement assured the public that regardless of the tragic incident and other forms of harassment, officers of the service would not relent in their efforts to discharge their responsibilities to the nation.
