Senate, Reps to resume Plenary in new Chambers after two years of Renovation

Members of the senate and house of representatives are set to resume plenary in renovated chambers.

The legislators will resume plenary on Tuesday (today) after an absence of more than five weeks.

The lawmakers had on March 20 embarked on Easter and Eid el-Fitr holidays. They were scheduled to reconvene on April 16, but the resumption was postponed.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, and Chief of Staff to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu inspected the renovated chambers of the House on Monday ahead of the lawmakers’ resumption.

Addressing journalists in the chambers, the Speaker said, he was delighted by its new look and the facilities installed in the building.

Gbajabiamila who also expressed satisfaction with the work done in the chambers, said he would have loved to see the renovation completed before he left the House to take his new appointment.

The renovation of the chamber began in April 2022.

Since then, the legislators have been using a temporary chamber in one of the committee rooms.

In 2019, the national assembly budgeted over N30 billion for the renovation of the complex, but the amount had sparked criticisms.

The sum was later reviewed to N9 billion.
