A road accident involving the student bus of the Borno State University has claimed the lives of three students of the institution while injuring 30 others.
The students who were celebrating their graduation from the school in Maiduguri after finishing their semester exams and returning home were in the school coaster bus carrying them when it crashed around 5:15 pm on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, in the Moranti suburb along the Maiduguri/Damaturu highway.
The bus reportedly collided with a Dangote truck killing three of the students on the spot.
According to a witness “the injured students were rushed to Umaru Shehu Hospital and the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) for medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Vice President of the National Union of Borno State Students (NUBOSS), Borno State chapter, Ali Mallam Gana, said the injured ones were severely wounded and in critical condition.
“As we speak, the Commissioner for Education and the Vice Chancellor of Borno State University are at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), where they are assisting with the treatment of the injured students,” Gana said.
“The bus, filled with students returning home after the school semester, was struck by the Dangote truck. This led to the loss of two lives and 23 others severely wounded,” Gana said.
He, however, said the number of casualties are yet to be ascertained as the injured are still receiving treatment in various hospitals.
